Tips to Cut Your Cooling Costs this Summer

Tips to Cut Your Cooling Costs this Summer

With summer typically comes a heatwave, so our air conditioning is working overtime to keep us cool and comfortable. If you're looking for ways to cut your cooling costs when using your existing unit or looking for air conditioner installation in the Greater Toronto Area be sure to read on.

Invest in a Smart Thermostat

Our first piece of advice is to invest in a smart thermostat. Modern technology allows us to control everything through our phones, so why wouldn't our air conditioning be different? Use your controls to turn the AC on an hour or two before you're due to arrive home so your unit isn't chugging away all day, or if you have pets at home you can set it to a temperature that's bearable for them.

Change Those Dirty Filters

Preventative measures can save hundreds, and the easiest measure you can take is to change your filters regularly. Your intake vent is responsible for pulling air from inside your home to be run through the entire system, cooled, and pushed back out through your vents. Dirt, debris, dander, and dust all collect on an air filter placed just inside the intake vent, which should be replaced at least once every two months. If you're unsure how to do this or your intake vent is in a location difficult to get to, schedule an appointment with A-Plus Quality, heating and cooling services in the Greater Toronto Area, for assistance.

Ceiling Fans Can Be Helpful

Learn to lean more on your ceiling fans in the lower portions of your home. Heat rises, so using fans and closing the vents in your downstairs or finished basement will force cold air to the top of your home. Additionally, you can use this method to target air into whatever room you spend most of your time in.

Annual Maintenance in the GTA

Although there are many things you can do to save on home’s HVAC bills, the most important way to save money is to schedule an HVAC maintenance appointment annually. Schedule an appointment with one of our technicians from A-Plus Quality, heating and cooling services in the Greater Toronto Area, to assure your HVAC system is in good working order.

FAQ

  • How do I know what size unit I need?
If you have any problems with your system, you should contact the contractor who installed the units. All our systems are covered by a 5 year parts, 7 year compressor limited warranty

  • Water is Leaking on my Furnace

Water falling on to the furnace can harm your heating unit by affecting the control boards and other components enclosed in the furnace. There can be many causes to the water overflow, but the most common cases in the summer is the ice build up inside the evaporator coil due to low refrigerant level. Water build up can also be due to the evaporator coil having a crack on the base, if this is the case contact us by booking an appointment or call us today to have a technician come have a look at your unit and repair this issue before it causes excessive damage.

  • Why should I maintain my Furnace or AC?

An annual maintenance will extend the lifetime of your heating and cooling unit. The technician will diagnose and repair any problem with the unit before it fails, so you won't need to worry about any problems when the weather gets very hot in the summer or extremely cold in the winter.

  • What is a mini-split?

By definition, and simply put, a “Split System” is a heating and air conditioning system which has two main components, the indoor unit and outdoor unit. In short, the indoor unit absorbs heat energy in the cooling mode, and the outdoor unit rejects the very heat absorbed by the indoor unit. And the cycle is repeated until the set temperature is met. Although the indoor and outdoor units are located in physically different, hence “split” locations, they are connected and operate as, one system; continuously circulating refrigerant liquid and vapor by means of interconnecting, dehydrated copper refrigerant lines, commonly referred to as a “Line Set”.

  • What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house and during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide equivalent space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional heating or cooling appliances.
